Earth Hour, Apparently
This one will be quick, honest.
So here's a question, for those of you who know what Earth Hour is/was (and if you don't, google it - this isn't an information source, you know):-
Why doesn't Earth Hour take place during the day?
There are many reasons that Earth Hour should take place at, oh, 3:30pm on a Thursday. It's supposed to be about changing our ways and saving the planet. But if you turn all your lights out in the dark, then it simply highlights the obvious; if you walk around in the dark, you keep bumping into stuff. If everyone participated in Earth Hour - and I mean everyone here, including motorists and whoever it is what keeps streetlights on - it would just emphasise how important it is to light things as much as possible. Our world would come grinding to a halt, and there'd be more motor accidents than you'd get if you put some drunk culchies on a bus with a Dennis Hopper-inspired bomb on board.
In short, we'd turn all our lights back on sharpish.
In the day, though - so much is wasted in the day, just by turning lights on that don't need to be turned on. Offices do it as a matter of course; many civic monuments are 'lit', even when they don't need to be; people are so used to living in a hermtically-sealed world that they automatically switch lights on when they walk into a small room. Turning lights off in the day actually could change habits and could stop people wasting energy, as they realised that artificial illuminating an all-glazed office building is almost as pointless as whatever work they actually do there.
So; why?
Because the photos wouldn't be any good, that's why. Because this society is so preoccupied with the image, that we can't possibly concede of a movement that doesn't have an image. Because this isn't really anything environmental, it's a dull, recurring public art project.
I watched Ireland v Bulgaria instead, and even that was more interesting. Now I'm going out to burn things. Lights out, folks.
